Smart city and smartest technical build-ups are the dream plans of the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Mamata Bannerjee has always wanted to grow Kolkata in a better way than London. Though there have been many criticisms about her London dreams, yet nothing could stop her from making Kolkata the first Wi-Fi city of India. There are many people to criticise her, but there are many who utilise the technical advancements to the fullest too. Setting up Wi-Fi at Park Street was probably the most essential step towards gaining youth attention.
The project that aimed at making Kolkata the Smart City will now have the plan to set up Wi-Fi hotspot across New Town. The authorities have engaged KPMG as consultants to advise them as to how best to come up with a pan-city solution in accordance with the Smart City Plan. There was a long discussion on the matter with a power-point presentation after which KPMG suggested that there may be 70 odd public Wi-Fi hotspots in different places of the township in bus stands, parks, markets, plazas and such other places where the first 30 minutes of the high-speed free internet will be provided to all.
There will also be the plan to provide houses with the Wi-Fi connections at a reasonable cost on application. The project will be handled through the public-private partnership.
