The news is that the iOS’ latest beta release (v2.16.7.1) is going to offer support for auto-playing GIF images. The Facebook-owned message app is also going to plate numerous improvements and bug fixes. So far the app has been resisting the invasion of gifs but now seeing the popularity of the image, Whatsapp has finally decided to support it.

As of now, there’s no news on whether gifs are going to be available on Android and to be clear the news hasn’t been officially declared but was reported by WABetaInfo – a site that tracks beta releases of the app. Changes listed by WABetaInfo include being able to save the gif image to your camera roll (and also comes with an option to save it as a simple image), auto-playing gifs when you share the link, you can directly reply to the gif image, support for Peek and Pop (3D Touch) actions on gif pictures and encryption support for gif sharing.

It’s worth noting that this news came in right after Whatsapp’s rival messenger service Viber announced gif image support. Facebook Messenger already supports gif image sharing on its platform. In Whatsapp, another major feature that is expected to arrive is the mobile video calling. Based on plenty of evidence, rumour is that the beta release of iOS is going to support voice calling.

To recall, the last major update of Whatsapp allowed users to share documents on the web. And before that Whatsapp had rolled out their first desktop app for OS X and Windows. The app can be downloaded from the official website that is compatible with Mac OS X 10.9 and higher, Windows 8 and higher (64-bit version) and Windows 8 and higher (32-bit version). During this update, the Whatsapp blog said: “Today [Tuesday] we’re introducing a desktop app so you have a new way to stay in touch anytime and anywhere – whether on your phone or computer at home or work.”
