Ever since its $21 Billion plus acquisition by Facebook, everyone’s favourite messaging app, WhatsApp, has regularly been rolling out new features with its updates, which included the WhatsApp calling feature. Now an update to version 2.16.189 of WhatsApp for Android Beta will add two new features to the messaging service. This comes just days after the app added a new font to its Beta version for its users to play around with during messaging on version 2.6.179.

The added features include a callback option and a voicemail option, both of which are extensions of the WhatsApp calling feature. After downloading the latest version from the Google Play beta testing program, the user will be required to make a call to another WhatsApp contact to be able to see any of the features. If the call is not answered or is declined, the app screen will show a “call declined” message along with three options- Cancel, Call Back, and Record Voice Message.

Choosing the Cancel option would close the screen on the app, while Call Back will allow the user to redial the contact directly without the need to jump back several windows. With the Record voice message option, the user will be required to press the mic icon to leave a voice message right from the same screen used to dial the call. The voicemail message will also appear in the chat window of the person it has been sent to. The addition of these two features are not expected to improve the functionality of the app, but they will be sure to deliver a simpler and more hassle-free overall experience for users in utilising the in-app features.

There are whispers afloat of Whatsapp adding a new video calling feature with its next updates, and this was recently spotted in testing on the Android beta app. However, it is unclear when the new features will finally make it to the stable releases available on the App Store or Google Play Store. Previous features released in the beta version that have not yet made it to stable releases include group invite links, improved music sharing and larger emojis.
