Uncharted 5:Be it action, exploration, or character building, Naughty Dog is renowned for paying equal attention to every single detail when it comes to their games. It comes as no surprise, then, that the California-based developers have reached critical acclaim with many of their offerings ranking high on fans’ lists of the best video game titles ever. Best known for their Uncharted and The Last of Us titles, the developershad great news for fans of both franchises in 2016.
Yes, The Last of Us 2 is finally happening, and Uncharted 4‘s success is being followed up with a great new expansion. But the latter’s release in 2016 only opened up further questions about what the studio plans to do with the series. After all, Uncharted has been one of the best-selling franchises in recent years. And even though the 2016 title’s ending looked like a fitting conclusionto the series, there were elements that some fans might see as a broad hint to a possible future.
Needless to say, both Naughty Dog and others who have been associated with the series have been plagued with questions regarding the possibility of Uncharted 5. Neil Druckmann’s answer was not one of absolute denial, but it was still far from being a confirmation. According to the Creative Director, it is entirely possible for the story to be taken forward with Uncharted 5, but Nathan Drake was not coming back as the protagonist that we have come to love. Sounds like bad news? Well, it really isn’t, because the ending to Uncharted 4 introduced us to a character who has the legacy and the potentialto become the next Nathan Drake. We’re talking about Cassie Drake here, and she was playable for a small section at the end of Uncharted 4.
But won’t that be a counterpoint of sorts to the ending to A Thief’s End? It just might not, and for all we know, Cassie could take up a totally different approach to going after treasures, as this source suggests. It also points out that Cassie being the protagonist for Uncharted 5 would also open the doors to Nate’s involvement in the future entries, for an Uncharted installment would feel kind of empty without having him around. So maybe we could have him around in the capacity of a supporting NPC? Who knows.
Uncharted 5 Release Date
What really interests us, however, is when will Uncharted 5 happen? It’s difficult to say at this point, especially because NaughtyDog has a lot on their plate right now. They’re currently busy with the long rumored and highly anticipated sequel to 2013’s The Last of Us, which they announced back in December last year. And then there is the DLC-turned-standalone entrycalledUncharted: The Lost Legacy. This second one is significant, as it serves as a clear pointer that the developers are willing to look beyond Drake and explore the series through the eyes of another charismatic character. Note that the protagonist is also a woman. The new expansion brings back Chole Frazer from Uncharted 2 along with her partner Nadine Ross, who are hunting for an artifact called the Tusk of Ganesha in the southern mountains of India.
We think this goes to show that the Uncharted series is certainly not exclusive to Nathan Drake, or even male protagonists for that matter. The Last of Us Part 2 also does something similar by bringing back Ellie as the main playable character this time in a story fuelled by revenge. Though it still remains to be seen how fans react to the upcoming expansion to Uncharted 4, we anticipate it would all go pretty well. After that, it could be just a matter of time until we hear about Uncharted 5, or so we hope.
