The group stages of the UEFA Champions League 2016-17 came to an end in the last week, and we have got the sixteen teams who have gone through to the pre-quarterfinals of the tournament. Now with the knockouts round the corner we are up for the draw which is going to take place within a few hour’s time.
The group stages of the UEFA Champions 2016-17 have seen some incredible encounters with many big teams failing to perform in the way they would have liked to. The first team that comes to mind while talking about the lack of consistency is Real Madrid. The defending champions failed to top the group with Borussia Dortmund taking the pole position in the Group F. Both the teams didn’t lose any of their matches, but the biggest turning point of the group was the Real Madrid vs Legia Warsaw encounter where Legia held the defending champions to a 3-3 draw, while Dortmund managed to win both the matches against Legia.
Six teams have remained unbeaten in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League 2016-17. And the list includes Arsenal, Paris Saint Germain Group A; Bayer Leverkusen from Group E and Juventus from Group H, other than Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in Group F. The winners of the groups will be in one bucket and the runner-ups on the other in the UCL 2016 Pre-Quarter Final Draw which will prevent the teams from same group coming against each other. But that could be possible once the UCL 2016 Pre-Quarter Finals get over and the Quarterfinals set in.
Arsenal finished the group stage on the top while PSG ended on the second spot in Group A. group B has been one of the most exciting groups with all the teams finishing very close to each other. Napoli won the group ahead of Benfica with 8 points, while Besiktas and Dynamo Kiev finished on 7 and 5 points respectively. It went down to the wire in this group. In Group C Barcelona were easy winners although they lost a match to Manchester City, but that did not prevent the Spanish giants to take the pole position.
Group D saw yet another Spanish team Atletico Madrid taking the first position ahead of German giants Bayern Munich. Atletico Madrid were unbeaten until their defeat in the last match against the Bayern Munich. Group E also had a thrilling end with Bayer Leverkusen finishing second despite remaining unbeaten. Monaco won the group with 11 points while Bayer Leverkusen ended with 10 points. English Premier League team Tottenham Hotspurs got demoted to the UEFA Europa League for finishing third in the group.
Group G saw the English Premier League champions Leicester City carrying on their dream run in the Europe’s biggest stage of club football. They remained unbeaten until their defeat at the hands of FC Porto away from home. FC Porto finished second with 11 points. And last but not the least is the Group H champion Juventus. They have kept on playing some brilliant football despite important players leaving their team in the summer. Sevilla followed Juventus into the knockouts of the UEFA Champions League 2016-17 ahead of Lyon with 11 points.
The draw for the pre-quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League 2016-17 will be taking place at Nyon in Switzerland from 11 AM GMT. The first leg of the knockouts will be played on February 14/15 and 21/22 while the second legs will be taking place on March 7/8 and 14/15.
