Types of Slitter Rewinders and Their Applications: When you talk about a reminder, you could be referring to any number of converting industries. It also depends on what the rewinder is being used for. It has very little to do with rewinding as you know it though.
Rewinding in the paper converting industry
In the paper converting world, a rewinder is used to refer to the machine which rewinds the end product. A product must unwind in order for it to rewind. This is how it works:
- The master roll of raw product is loaded onto the back stand.
- Once it unwinds, it is webbed through what is known as the slitter (rewinder machine).
- The slitter slits the product into lots of strips.
- The slit product moves on to the second part of the slitter and is rewound onto smaller cores to the needed size and diameter.
Most of the slitter rewinders have quite a number of options and many levels of automation. A slitter rewinder has quite a few references:
- Unwind Stand
All three terms refer to parts of the slitter rewinder. Therefore, you should not be confused when someone talks about a winder, for instance. However, you need to be aware of the meaning when used in a sentence, least of all because whatever is being referred might have nothing to do with a machine!
Types of slitter rewinders
If you are familiar with the converting industry, then you have an inkling of what a slitter is and what it does. You are also aware of the end product. What you may not be aware of is the fact that slitter rewinders slit other materials other than paper.
What end products, you ask?
You have come across the following:
- Cash register rolls
- Credit card receipts
- ATM receipts
You are vigorously nodding your head because, of course, you have! Those are the end products. Before they got to be those little slips of paper that slide out of some slot, they were part of a huge single roll that hard to be slit into the small ones you get after a transaction.
The machine that is used to slit the big roll into smaller ones is known as the slitter rewinder, or simply a slitter or winder.
Types of slitter rewinders include:
- Duplex slitter rewinders
- Centre wind slitters
- Duplex wind slitters
The types of slitters depend on the types of material being cut. The materials range from the soft non-abrasive to hard plastic.
Soft materials include:
- Plastic films
- Adhesive tapes
These ones are slit with razor blades, straight or circular blades.
Hard materials include:
- Sheet metals
- Hard plastic
To cut these, you need something stronger than a blade. A modified form of shearing is needed since these materials are too hard for mere blades.
It is imperative that you know what application you need your slitter rewinders for so that you can get the right machine for the right materials and avoid a situation where your product is rejected because it is messy or it has been cut badly.
