The Last of Us 2: It has been three years since Naughty Dog‘s famed third-person action-adventure horror title, The Last of Us, came out in 2013. Now it is 2016, and the prospects of fans getting a sequel looks much more promising than it did ever before. Despite there being no official confirmations about the development of The Last of Us 2, or whatever Naughty Dog decide to call the next title in the franchise, tidbits of information have been floating around about the game being already in production. One report, in particular, claims that the developers of The Last of Us 2 are busy working on a prototype of the upcoming title.
Despite the lack of solid evidence to support the above rumour, we may look back at a few instances when certain comments from those associated with the first title suggested that there was going to be a second title in the series. Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann said in 2015 that the team was actively experimenting with a slew of ideas for The Last of Us 2.
Additionally, Nolan North, a voice actor on board the Uncharted series also confirmed in a panel interview that The Last of Us 2 is currently underway. When a fan asked him a question regarding upcoming projects, he said he was not involved with Naughty Dog at the time. However, he ended up saying, “I know they’re doing a Last of Us 2,” implying that work on the upcoming game had already begun.
But even if the new game is already in the early stages of development, the actual finished product will undoubtedly take a lot of time to surface. Earlier, the programmer had said that a sequel would be dependent on a lot of factors, chief among which was a storyline that would not feel repetitive. This statement points to the fact that the developers do not intend to hurry6 through a new project that will be subpar in terms of quality.
The Last of Us 2 Release Date
Naughty Dog released their last big title, Uncharted 4, back in May. This has led fans to believe that the makers will now have the necessary time to focus exclusively on their next major project presumed to be none other than The Last of Us 2. In fact, many are already expecting to hear an official announcement about the upcoming game sometime soon. Assuming that Naughty Dog has decided to greenlight The Last of Us 2 immediately after the release of Uncharted 4, then perhaps there is a possibility of an announcement to be made by 2017. Druckmann had pointed out in an interview earlier that The Last of Us had required three years and a half for its development to be completed. Taking that timeline into account, we may be looking at a release window for The Last of Us 2 between 2020 or 2021.
The Last of Us 2 Concept
The next game in the series will also undoubtedly follow the same genre of a survival horror game. The reason why the developers are so anxious about the prospects of The Last of Us 2 is because of the widespread acclaim that the previous title had received with both critics and fans. Almost every aspect of the game, spanning from its visuals to its storyline along with its combat elements, were deemed as outstanding by reviewers and fans. Its characterisation was equally praised. This understandably puts a lot of pressure on the makers to come up with a new game that will mark a significant improvement over the first title.
Not much is known about the specific features of The Last of Us 2 considering that the game may have just entered development. However, reports state that the new game will feature new protagonists in order to provide freshness. Druckmann said in an enlightening interview with The Frame that characterisation forms a core part in his projects, and their dynamism and diversity are key factors in making them successful. Fans are certain that this will find ample reflection in The Last of Us 2.
Other speculations indicate that The Last of Us 2 may follow the lead of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and come with a VR Mode for a more immersive horror experience.
