Stephen King’s best-seller novel is being adapted for the big screen. Directed by Andres Muschietti, the first trailer for the film came out yesterday and watching it will give you clown nightmare. It 2017 comes to theaters on September 8, 2017.
The supernatural horror film is scripted by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, and Gary Dauberman. Directed by Andres Muschietti, the namesake character is an eponymous being who appears as a dancing clown and terrorizes children. It/Pennywise, who thrives on the fears and phobias is being played by Bill Skarsgard.
EW released the first look of the film back in December 2016 and it showed Pennywise is a sinister little poster. One of the mark differences in Pennywise is the dark sinister look compared to the cheery and bright one in the 1990 miniseries adaptation of the book.
The Emmy-winning costume designer Janie Bryan was hired to bring the version of Pennywise to life. She crafted a suit based on the by-gone eras – Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, and Victorian eras. The clown’s costume is a mixed style of all these eras.
“The costume definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will,” Bryant says. “He is definitely a clown from a different time.”
Speaking on how the costume fleshes out the character of the dancing clown. “There is almost a doll-like quality to the costume. The pants being short, the high waistline of the jacket and the fit of the costume is a very important element. It gives the character a child-like quality.”
“It [the costume] makes him almost like a shadow,” she says.
Besides Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise The Dancing Clown, the film also stars Jaeden Lieberher as Bill Denbrough, with Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, Finn Wolfhard, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Nicholas Hamilton.
It 2017 is scheduled to hit the theaters on September 8, 2017.
