The Groupe Special Mobile Association (GSMA) elected MrSunil Mittal as Chairman which would be a tenure of 2 years starting from January 2017 to December 2018. The election was held in a Board of Delegation Meeting comprising 26 Members in the presence of Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, here in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The newly elected 26 members of Board of Delegation came up with a decision of making their new Chairman as Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprisesalong with re-electing Mari-Nolle Jego-Laveissiere, Executive Vice-President, Innovation Orange Group as Deputy Chair. The role essayed by Mr Mital will be to keep a watch over the strategicdirection of the organisation which represents nearly 800 world’s mobile operators along with 300 firms in the broadermobile ecosystem.
This would be the first time that an Indian has been elected as Chairman followed by a meeting that highlighted some of the mandatory and pivotal roles of mobile handsets, which serve as the sole mission of the nation’s Digital India vision. The ongoing broadband facilitation in the country will as a utility to every citizen hence bringing financial and digital inclusion in every niche.
The newly appointed Chairman of GSMA, Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal also has various other roles to play such as Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Board and Councils of International Bodies and Think-Tank like World Economic Forum, Telecom Board of International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Broadband Commission, and so on. He also serves his term as Trustee of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace as well as Board of Qatar Foundation Endowment.
At present the serving Chairman of GSMA Jon Fredrik Baksaas who will step down in December 2016 after serving the post for 3 long years. The election was done back in 2008 where he was re-elected many of times. The election came as a step to innovate in a similar sector as at current census, near about 4.8 million people have subscribed to mobile networking and with being one of the fastest growing networking in the global arena.

Earlier, he played as a host in the inauguration of GSMA Mobile 360-India event in New Delhi this week which followed with a Board meeting with the delegatory bodies.
