Star Wars Episode VIII: The sequel to 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, known as Star Wars Episode VIII for now, is not scheduled for release before late 2017. But for a film still fairly in the middle stages of its production, the upcoming instalment has been at the centre of a large amount of speculation surrounding its story and characters. But one question that has been plaguing the minds of fans ever since the first movie came out has to do with the character of Rey.
Rey, one of the central charactersin The Force Awakens, is a scavenger who was left behind as a child on the planet Jakku. Neither she nor the viewers have any idea who her parents are or why they left her. But she quickly establishes herself as a skilled warrior with a fierce kind of integrity who values loyalty above all else. But as Rey went on to become one of the most impressive female leads in present times, the matter of her parentage is yet to be disclosed.
It was initially assumed that Rey was just another abandoned child on the desert planet, but it soon became evident that she was no ordinary girl, hinting at the possibility that her lineage must be significant. As some fans point out, many of the situations she finds herself in closely echo those of Luke Skywalker. Indeed, The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams was reported as saying in an earlier interview that Rey’s parents, whose identities remain shrouded in mystery, may have been shown in the first film, thus adding more weight to the speculation.
For now, however, there is no way to know the truth about Rey’s real identity. However, we may not be far away from uncovering the truth about the matter. In an interview with Vulture, actress Daisy Ridley revealed that the answer to the question will be found out in the upcoming film itself. In addition to this, she also expressed her opinions about some of the rumours going around about Rey’s possible parentage. Among the ones that Ridley debunked was the theory that perhapsJyn Erso(Felicity Jones‘s character from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) is Rey’smother. The actress said that the Star Wars timeline would pose as a hindrance for this theory to work out.
