Sania Mirza Biopic: At the moment, Bollywood isgoing big on biopics which essay the life and times of ordinary people with extraordinary achievements. This year alone, several such projects are already underway, and sports personalities seem to be the focus of attention.

Sania Mirza is the Indian film industry’s next sportsman of choice to be made a biopic on. The tennis star who is currently placed at No. 1 in the women’s double rankings has confirmed that she has been approached by representatives of the film industry regarding the matter.

“There have been talks about it. Some from the film industry have approached me,(…) talks are in anadvanced stage, but we are yet to finalise things,” said the sports sensation who is an icon to the youth of the country.

The finer details of the project, like which actress will be seen stepping into the tennis ace’s shoes, are yet to be finalised. When askedif she would consider appearing in the film as herself, Sania was quick to reply,“I am too shy to act on camera”. She further added that being foremost a tennis player who is not planning on retiring anytime soon, she would never be able to devote the kind of time necessary for acting in a film.

Mirza’s life has been anything but smooth sailing;her autobiography, aptly entitled Ace Against Odds describes how the 29-year-old has struggled to balance her intimate personal life with her public image under the scrutinising gaze of the media. One of the mostpainful experiences in her life, she recalls, was when she was hounded by the media and the public over her marriage to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and was even hailed as being an anti-national.

We can be certain that Mirza’s rollercoaster-like life has enough material for an intriguing and inspiring film. Other notable upcoming biopics to look out for this year arethe Aamir Khan starrer Dangal (based on the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained his daughters to be the first Indian women to win international accolades in the wrestling category) and M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (which will portray both the personal struggles and professional successes of the reigning captain of the Indian Cricket team).
