It has been more than three years now since the cricket fans have lasted seen Sachin Tendulkar taking the field to play in an international match. But the craze around this man has shown no signs of getting ceased as we all love to see this living legend every time he makes an appearance anywhere. And this time he has been found saying that the world cricket nowadays lacks the kind of rivalry that his contemporary players used to share has somewhat made things looking much easier.
In a function where a number of high officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) including Anurag Thakur were present, Sachin Tendulkar was found saying a lot of things which are bound to make the things much better for test cricket. He has found saying that during his days there used to be great on-field battles going on between the players. But at the moment it’s not very often that we can see such rivalries being fought out on the field.
He has been quoted saying, “When I was growing up, I watched Imran Khan bowling to Sunil Gavaskar and their rivalry was really engaging. We saw how to defend on backfoot among many other things. The competitive rivalries of Viv Richards-Jeff Thompson, Curtly Ambrose-Steve Waugh, Brian Lara-Glenn McGrath, generated a lot of interest among the fans.” He also added, “The West Indies were magnificent in the 1980s and also in the 1990s. The whole world’s target was to beat them. Then came Australia. They had nine world class players and two terrific players. If 3-4 of their players clicked and did the job, they would win. That is missing today.”
He also stated how the introduction of more and more T20 cricket had affected the interest of the people in test match cricket. At the function of the HT Leadership Summit, he said, “The mindset of the people is changing. Twenty20s and technology have changed that mindset. When I was growing up, we were watching Tests and now kids watch T20.” Not only Sachin Tendulkar, many other cricket experts have also been found to be saying that the interests of the children should not shift from Test cricket because that it the purest form of the game and it puts to test all the skills that a player possesses.
Other than this he was also asked about his life after his retirement in November 2013 and whether he misses cricket or not. To that, he answered, “I did not miss playing cricket after I retired but it is nice to play an exhibition game once in a while. I played three games in America with retired cricketers, and the response was magnificent. But yes, I do miss the love and affection of the fans. It is nice that I get to do the things that I could not do while playing. Overall it has given me the opportunity to live life on my terms and mingle around.”
Sachin Tendulkar played his last for India against West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. It was also his 200th test match in his career which made him the first person to reach the milestone in the history of test match cricket. Tendulkar also holds the record for the most number of runs scored by an individual in both test matches and one-day internationals.
