The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story makers have dropped a new official trailer, and fans are already going wild. While we are pretty sure that the first standalone first stand-alone Star Wars Anthology film would be pretty hype-worthy by itself, there is another, bigger cause for going ga-ga over this particular trailer.
For it features none other than a presence who has been absent from the limelight since his 2005 appearance in Revenge of the Sith. Just before the trailer closes after a pretty detailed showcasing of every epic sci-fi material in the vein of any Star Wars movie that you may have watched, we see part of a black figure from the back which is none other than Darth Vader himself. The look was just a tease, and considering that Darth Vader appears at the 1:55 mark for all of two seconds in a video that spans 2 minutes, 15 seconds, the less attentive might have missed it altogether. It almost feels like an important post-credits scene, you know, like the ones that most of us miss out on because we just can’s stick around for that long after movie seemingly ends.
Despite the tease, the two-second presence of Vader is definitely what lifts the trailer from “okay” to “outstanding”. The film’s story chronicles the events prior to the 1977 Star Wars original when the Death Star was being built and Vader was in his prime as the Emperor’s galactic enforcer. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story follows a group of Rebel fighters who come together on a desperate mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, the Emperor’s ultimate weapon of destruction, that will ultimately allow them to destroy the moon-sized battlestation.
The return of Darth Vader has been rumored ever since news of a standalone Star Wars film first came to light. But director Gareth Edwards never confirmed anything despite James Earl Jones’s reported visitations to the studio. The film that releases in the United States on December 16 this year boasts of a cast comprising of Felicity Jones, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, and Riz Ahmed among others. James Earl Jones is returning as the voice of Vader, who will loom large as the Emperor’s right hand.
