Perhaps the most celebrated name in swimming and decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps will look to enter the Olympic waters for the last time in his career in the games village at Rio. The all-time record holder of the maximum number of gold medals for a single participant ( 19 Olympic gold medals to be exact) crossed the 31 year-mark in June earlier this year and has already stated that the games in Rio this year will be his last.
Phelps caught the eye of the entire sporting world in the 2004 summer Olympics held in Athens where he bagged 6 gold medals and 2 bronze medals in his maiden Olympic event. At the same event, he also became the became the second male swimmer ever to win more than two individual titles at a single Games with four, tying Mark Spitz’s four from 1972.
With his fair share of controversies, Phelps was subjected to various rumours and true facts alike in accordance with the usage of performance-enhancing drugs and the consumption of addictive substances. Phelps was questioned about his incredible feats and was subjected to rumours regarding the use of performance-enhancers during the 2008 Olympic events. Phelps already bagged the gold in the 4x100m freestyle Relay for USA on Sunday starting his final campaign of on a high. He will be swimming in three individual events —the 100m butterfly, the 200m butterfly and the 200m individual medley. On Monday, he also qualified for the 200m butterfly finals to be held on the 10th of August.
