Jamaican Athlete and superstar Usain “Lightning” Bolt is all set to begin his Rio Olympics 2016 campaign at the games village with his first event which will be the men’s 100m race in Brazil on Saturday. Regarded as the fastest person ever timed, he is the first man to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records since fully automatic time became mandatory.
Bolt exploded on to the scene at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he claimed three gold medals and clocked an astonishing 9.63 seconds but he bettered that the following year when he became the first man under 9.6 seconds at the 2009 world championships in Berlin.
What can Bolt boast of? :
Eleven-time World Champion Usain Bolt, he won consecutive World Championship 100 m, 200 m and 4 × 100 metres relay gold medals from 2009 to 2015, with the exception of a 100 m false start in 2011. He is the most successful athlete of the World Championships and was the first athlete to win three titles in both the 100 m and 200 m at the competition.
Bolt gained worldwide popularity for his double sprint victory at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in world record times. He later became the first man at the Olympic Games to win six gold medals for sprinting. He was the first to win consecutive Olympic 100 m and 200m titles (2008 and 2012).
Bolt’s most successful event is the 200 m, with two Olympic and four World titles. The 2008 Olympics was his international debut over 100 m; he had earlier won numerous 200 m medals (including 2007 World Championship silver) and holds the world under-20 and world under-18 records for the event.
Why is his opening event (100m sprint) so highlighted?
Usain Bolt will be attempting to be the first man to win three back-to-back Olympic 100m titles. A win would earn him his seventh Olympic gold, and take him one step closer towards managing the ‘treble treble’.
Who will Bolt be up against?
Including the heats, Bolt will have to run a total of three races and win all of them to be crowned the Olympic champions of the 100m finals. Based on current form and overall credibility, Bolt will be up against a host of his fellow countrymen as well as eminent sprinters in the likes of Justin Gatlin from USA, who has been the fastest man in this calendar year breaking a number of Bolt’s records.
