PBL Auction Season 2: The Premier Badminton League 2017 is up and running as the auction of the upcoming season has already kicked-off today. Although all the eyes are glued to what’s happening in the United States of America at this moment, you just can’t keep your eyes off the auction that’s taking place at the moment for the upcoming PBL season.

Premier Badminton League Season 2: History

The Premier Badminton League came in the field of Indian sports in 2013 with the title Indian Badminton League. However, before the beginning of the second season in 2016, it got rechristened to Premier Badminton League. It had six teams participating in the tournament which was based out of six different zones in India. Hyderabad Hotshots won the inaugural tournament while Delhi Acers clinched the second year’s title as they beat the Mumbai Rockers in the finals.

PBL Auction Updates

The Premier Badminton League auction kicked off in Delhi early this morning. Six teams will be participating in the tournament which will be Delhi Acers, Mumbai Rockets, Chennai Smashers, Hyderabad Hunters, Awadhe Warriors and Bangalore Blasters (previous name Bangalore Top Guns). All available players are up for the grab in this PBL auction when the six teams come head-to-head off the court. Players from different countries will go under hammer although the Chinese and the Japanese have decided to give it a skip for they will be busy with their engagements in their own domestic circuits. Even then it’s going to be exciting as players like PV Sindhu, Olympic Champion Spanish Carolina Marin, Saina Nehwal will go under the hammer. Also, notable Indian and foreign doubles players will be up for the grab in this Premier Badminton League auction for the season 2. The teams will get the opportunity to retain a maximum of three players with the Right to Match facility. Each team will be given a bank of Rs. 1.93 crore and with players being expected to be priced as high as 65 lakhs, this is going to be exciting.

Men’s doubles world number 3 V Shem Goh became the first player in the PBL Auction 2016 to go under the hammer and Awadhe Warriors bagged him for INR 33 Lacs. Mumbai Rockets bought the World Number 1 Mixed Doubles Player Lee Yong Dae at a price of 37.5 lacs. The first big name from the women’s singles segment was incidentally Carolina Marin, and she was bagged by the Hyderabad Hunters at a price tag of 61.5 Lacs. Mumbai Rocket’s second big buy was Sung Ji Hyun for 60 lacs, who is bound to be their second Icon Player. Awadhi Warriors’ first big purchase was Srikanth Kidambi for INR 51 Lacs.

However the biggest news of the day in the Premier Badminton League Auction Season 2 is Saina Nehwal who remained unsold in the first round of the auction. She does get a second opportunity in the second round, but that’s quite shocking to find India’s first Olympic Bronze medalist in Badminton has been rejected by all the franchises. Also, this might just be the outcome of the series of injuries from which she has suffered from in recent times which even saw her bow out in the earlier stages of the Rio Olympics. Delhi Acers’ first buy in this PBL Auction has been Dane shuttler Jan o Jorgensen, and this is expected to be a great buy for Delhi. Bengaluru  Blasters get Yoo Yean Seong for 39 lacs and Danish Viktor Axelsen for the same price. PV Sindhu doesn’t get a new team and is staying with her previous recruiter Chennai Smashers with a price tag of 39 lacs. Wee Liong Tan remained unsold primarily, but she found a franchise when Hyderabad Hunters opted for her. Ashwini Ponappa, India’s one of the renowned shuttlers, was first bagged by the Delhi at a price of 13 Lacs. However, Bengaluru applied their Right to match and retained her with a price tag of 15 Lacs. But Delhi did fail to grab the opportunity to bag Jwala Gutta who is also one of the best on the court, and they have to spend 10 Lacs for her.

Bengaluru’s next big buy is Porntip Burnapresertsuk from Thailand as they got him for INR 22 Lacs. Goods news came flying in for the Hyderabadi girl Saina Nehwal as she is retained by her former team Awadhe Warriors. In the first round of the auction, she remained unsold. Ukrainian Maria Ulitina who grabbed the headlines in the Rio Olympics after beating Saina in the group stages of the tournament, unfortunately, did not find any taker. Another substantial recruitment from the Hyderabad franchise has been Chau Hoi Wah as they have got him for only INR 17 Lacs.

In the second session of the PBL auction 2016, the first big buy is Ajay Jayaram as he is taken up by Mumbai Rockets at the cost of INR 19 Lacs. However, Anand Pawar has failed to find a team. The youngster from India Sourabh Verma was picked up by Bengaluru at a price of 13 Lacs. Awadhi Warriors picked up Wong Wing Ki for 17 Lacs while B. Sai Praneeth cost 21 Lacs to Hyderabad Hunters. Parupalli Kashyap got picked up at a price of 8 Lacs by Chennai Smashers.Another costly pick for Awadhi Warrior besides picking up Saina was Savitree Amritapai. Chennai added Tanongsak to their squad for INR 30 Lacs. Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun was taken up by Bengaluru at a price of INR 33 Lacs. Hyderabad Hunters bolstered their squad as they added they added Sai Praneeth expending 21 Lacs for him. Mumbai Rockets availed the service of Nipitphon Phuangphuapet at the cost of INR 17 Lacs. Towards the end of the auction, there were great picks from different at a high price as well. One of those picks were Chris Adcock for 26 Lacs who is also one of the best when it comes to mixed doubles. In the end, it was a good session of bidding as most of the teams fulfilled their full quota of players. Few splendid picks and few were not so good. But the teams as it stands now look good to fight it out for the Premier Badminton League 2017.

As the Premier Badminton League Auction has gone by, it seems that we can expect great action as it moves on further and names of young players come under the hammer. Carolina Marin has the grabbed the top spot as far as price tags are concerned. She has been bought at the cost of 61.5 lacs by Hyderabad Hunters. Jan o Jorgensen follows her at second spot with a price tag of 59 lacs who has been purchased by the Delhi Acers. Indian duo of Srikanth Kidambi is at the third place with a price tag of 51 lacs followed by PV Sindhu at the fourth spot with a price tag of 39 lacs.
