Electric cars are yet to take the global auto industry by storm, bound by several factors that include prohibitive prices and the general perception that all-electric cars are slow. Its not, however. Enter the new NIO, from electric car company NextEV, with its newest model, the NIO EP9 being touted as the fastest electric car in the world with a top speed of 313Kms/h.
Early last month, the NIO EP9 set a new lap record at Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany by completed the 20.8km long track in seven minutes and 5.12 seconds, beating all previous lap records set by any Electric Vehicle, or EV. The EP9 also beat the EV record at France’s Circuit Paul Ricard by around 50 seconds, taking 2.7 seconds to reach 100 Kms. and a top speed of around 320 Kms./h. It also has a 0-100 Kms./h time of 2.7 seconds.
The Chinese electric car maker NextEV unveiled the NIO in London and promises to help users “rediscover the ‘joyful lifestyle‘ of car ownership by creating inspiring vehicles that deliver superior performance, a new benchmark for aesthetic design and unique user experiences“.
NIO EP9 Engine Performance
The NIO EP9 gets four high-performance inboard motors and four individual gearboxes and delivers 1-MegaWatt of power, equivalent to 1,341bhp. The EP9 is capable of achieving 24,000 Newtons of downforce at 240kph.
NIO EP9 Battery and Range
The EP9 can be charged in 45 minutes, which is the electric car equivalent of a full tank of fuel, and has a range of 427 kilometres. Conventional car users will not face any inconvenience, therefore, if they switch to this particular electric car. The battery charging mechanism is compatible with Indian commercial power outlets.
NIO EP9: Potential Controversy
Although tagged as the fastest electric car in the world, The Elon Musk-owned Tesla Motors manufactures the Tesla P100D, the current version of which is faster than the NIO EP by 0.2 seconds. That can be put down by NIO manufacturers’ NextEV with the technical arguement that although the Tesla vehicle is in production, their’s is not.
When asked about the potential rivalry with Tesla Motors, the world’s most dominant player in the electric car segment, NextEV Founder and Chairman, William Li simply said,”It is a best-in-class product that showcases what is possible with electric vehicles. We believe that when the car ownership experience exceeds expectations, electric vehicles will become the natural choice for everyone, leading to a more sustainable tomorrow. And with that, our vision of a blue sky will come true,”.
This radical new launch might revolutionise the way consumers look at electric cars.
