You probably know that Neil Gaiman’s American Gods is being made into a television series by Starz. The network just dropped in their latest trailer and things look weirder than the teaser was. The show is being created by Michael Green and Bryan Fuller who has made a number of critically acclaimed TV shows like Hannibal, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, etc.

Published in 2001, the book American Gods is a mix of fantasy, Americana, modern mythology and various strands of mystery surrounding the lead, Shadow Moon. Like the novel, the TV show focuses on Shadow Moon who after being sentenced for three years to serve in prison, is suddenly released early. Shadow finds a job but is conned into becoming the bodyguard of the god Odin. Meanwhile, the New Gods are gathering across America for a much-waited showdown. Sounds weird right? But not for those who’ve read the book and have a god idea of what’s to up. For the rest, I’m afraid you’ll have to see the show to understand it.

American Gods stars Ricky Whittle who plays the lead – Shadow Moon, Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning as Laura Moon, Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney, among a handful of new characters that don’t appear in the novel. This is Ricky Whittle’s first appearance on a show after he was bullied off CW’s The 100. The actor told in an interview with AfterbuzzTV that “Lincoln wasn’t supposed to die this season (The 100 season 3). He had a whole storyline that was cut, that was just nonexistent. It was my choice to go.”

Neil Gaiman is on board the show as executive producer along with Green, Fuller, Stefanie Berk, Craig Cegielski, and Thom Beers. As for the future of the show, Gaiman had revealed American Gods season 1 will cover only the first third of the novel.

The first season of American Gods will have eight-episode and will be premiering on April 30, 2017.
