How is Netball played?

  • Netball is a sport that is played between two teams of 7 players each. It is a ball sport and it needs a rectangular court that consists of raised goal posts (10 feet in height). With baskets (15 inches in diameter), at either end of the court. The objective is to dunk as many goals through the basket.
  • Each player is delegated specific positions. This is their role within the collective team and this also restricts their movement to other areas of the court. A player in possession of the ball can hold it for only 3 seconds.
  • After which he/she has to pass or shoot the ball towards a teammate or the goal respectively. The team that scores the most number of goals within the stipulated 60 minutes (4 quarters) wins the game.
  • Play starts from the centre position at the start of each quarter and if a goal is scored.
  • Once the centre pass is made, up to four players can easily move towards the center third to collect a pass. The center pass should be touched or caught within the center third only. The ball can then be moved upward the court through passes.

The ball should be released before it can land on the same foot they caught the ball with, touches the court again. Contact between two opponents is only permitted if it does not hamper an opponent during play. If caught however during an impediment, the player in question cannot participate further until the play is resumed.

Netball’s global reach

Netball was derived in the early 1890s, inspired by basketball. By the 1960s, rules for international netball were already standardized. The International Federation of Netball and International Netball Federation were formed shortly.

As of 2011, INF is comprised of more than 60 teams that play internationally. This is divided into 5 global regions. It is played in close to 80 countries worldwide. The game is extremely popular among the Commonwealth nations. Women dominate the netball scene worldwide. Ladies netball games gather large participation around the world. From 1995, netball was recognized as an Olympic sport.
