During her visit to New Delhi for the HT Leadership Summit, supermodel Naomi Campbell said that she would love to come to India again and again as she feels that India is home to a lot of confident and strong women who contribute a lot in her quest for gender equality. She also said that she would like to do a confidence masterclass with young girls, the group not being restricted to those who wish to be models in the future but in general to boost the girls’ confidence. Naomi said that she would like to share with the young girls the knowledge that she had learned during the course of her life.

Naomi Campbell recalled her time in 1994 when she chose Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the winner of the Miss World contest, saying that Aishwarya was the most ‘stunning’ of the lot. The actor-model said as a woman of colour her aim has always been to encourage diversity in showbiz as well as various other fields.

“When I started in 1986, there were runway and magazine models. My group of girls, we became the bridge of mixing the two and were thus called ‘supermodels’. It’s important as a woman of colour, to represent: Campbell talks about diversity in the industry,” she added.

Naomi Campbell talked about her childhood and how her mother had been the biggest source of her strength, both physical and mental. She said that while she spent only a fraction of her childhood with her mother, as her mother was a ballerina and she was raised by a nanny, she admitted that her mother had sacrificed a lot for her.

Naomi Campbell’s interests in India are not just limited to the strength that she sees in the young girls here, but also in the yoga practices of the country. “When I was doing yoga in England, it wasn’t clicking. I couldn’t understand the mind, body and spirit part. I shut my phone and went to Kerala,” she said.
