Mohenjo Daro Collection: Ashutosh Gowarikar‘s period drama, Mohenjo Daro, had created much hype before its release- it aimed to tackle a period in history which was of utmost cultural importance, yet no one had cared to represent it on film before. This gave Gowarikar’s expensive and ambitious project a sense of novelty, and the film was expected to have an epic run and perform well at the Box Office. However, the truth turned out to be far from expectations, and this had a major reflection in the Mohenjo Daro Box Office Collection, both in India and abroad.
Mohenjo Daro, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde in the leading roles, was released on August 12, 2016, alongside another big hitter, the Akshay Kumar starrer Neeraj Pandey film Rustom. But while the latter scored it big at the Collections, Mohenjo Daro has seen a slump that the makers of the film were clearly not ready for. Let’s take a look at the numbers, which as always, speak for themselves.
Mohenjo Daro Domestic Box Office Collection Till Now:
The film had a huge release in India across 2700 screens, but that could not stop the film from bombing at the Box Office. Mohenjo Daro’s total lifetime collection at the Box Office on a domestic level remains under INR 60 crores, which basically spells disaster for a film which so many people were counting on. The film had a dismal start which turned out to deteriorate with each passing day. So while the week of its release earned the film INR 51.5 crores, the following weeks saw it fall flat on its face with a total earning of less than INR 8 crores. The movie has ceased its run at the Box Office, bringing its total lifetime domestic collection to a meagre INR 59 crores.
Mohenjo Daro Overseas Box Office Collection (Total):
Mohenjo Daro released across 450 screens in foreign countries, and it has accumulated a total of INR 30 crores overseas in its lifetime. Whatever collections the film has made abroad can be attributed to the star actor Hrithik Roshan’s popularity.
Mohenjo Daro Total Lifetime Box Office Collection:
So as we have it, Mohenjo Daro has earned a total of INR (59+30) 89 crores worldwide at the Box Office after three weeks of the slow run. This is hugely disappointing as the production cost itself was INR 105 crores.
Verdict:
Mohenjo Daro has proved that for a film to do well, nothing is more important than its content, despite having big names and big bucks associated with it. Mohenjo Daro lifetime Box Office collection make it one of the sorest flops of the year so far, incurring huge losses for its producers.
The film had its formula wrong from the very outset. It took on a topic which every single person who has ever taken history lessons is well aware of, and handled it wrong. Whatever little glimpses were given by the teasers before the film’s release were enough for film enthusiasts to figure out what to expect. Gowarikar may have claimed to do intense research into the history and archaeology of the period, but none of that showed through on the screen. Ultimately, the film was lost in a mire of a shallow plot and unimpressive performances. All we can say is, Mohenjo Daro is the biggest mistake in the careers of Hrithik Roshan and Ashutosh Gowarikar. Perhaps they will take this failure in their stride and really work on making their future projects worthwhile.
