Konkan Railways, which cover the 741 km long route through Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka is planning to invest as much as 20,000 crores INR for improvisation. These include betterment of freight capacity, connectivity, beautification, and so on.
The sceneric beauty has attracted millions around the globe from ages. Thus, investment of such huge amount is mandatory. The connectivity will help in enhancing passenger commuting as well as betterment of ports. The project will increase the linking of various industries thus helping in the growth of all three states of India. The first way to enhance connectivity would be electrification of locomotives for freight and passenger commuting.

The transportation is mostly occupied with projects inChiplun-Karad, Vaibhavwadi-Kolhapur and Jaigad-Dighni stations, eventually improving the output in comparison to present financial year which was up to 20%. The distance between Chiplun and Karad, km approximately 1km. Will benefit the cargos arriving from ports in Maharashtra region after the connectivity thus, helping cities like Belgaum, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Latur, Parli, Solapur.
Other than port stations connectivity, Vaibhavwadi Kolhapur Line will finalise the connectivity of Central Railways to Konkan Railways. Though it has a single port of Jaigad further adjoining JSW ports. Konkan Railways plan to double the tracks will acquire 11,000 crores INR whereas electrification will cost 710 crores INR.
According to Sanjay Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), 22 percent growth in revenues on the basis of a 24 percent rise in freight revenues and 4 percent in passenger revenues. Efforts are being made to rope in private participation for port connectivity projects. The Vaibhavwadi-Kolhapur link would be built under the aegis of the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation, with 50% funding from Maharashtra state, even asefforts are on to find a private stakeholder. KRCL estimates a 20% growth in freight volumes on account of these initiatives.
In a previous fiscal year, KRCL generated revenue of 1,323 crores INR in 2014-15 in comparison to 1,277 crores INR in 2013-14. After the increase in total income, human resource too doubled up to 4,943 employees altogether. The efforts are put in an even manner so as to inculcate 741 km long route among the major three states. The course includes 2,000 bridges and almost 60 stations within the link.
The trains, cargo as well as passenger, which uses Konkan Railway route consists of Mandovi Express, Mangalore Express, Mumbai Express, Konkan Kanya Express, Rajya Rani Express, and Goa Sampark Kranti Express.
