The Greatest Show on the Earth, the Rio Olympics 2016 has already started its proceedings with a brilliant Opening Ceremony at the historical Maracana Stadium on Friday, 5th of August. And on the first day of this 28th edition of the global sporting event, Indian athletes have given a mixed bag performances so far. While the Indian Hockey Team kicked off their campaign with a great victory over the Ireland with a 3-2 scoreline, the lady shooters have failed to make the cut for the final. But among those results, one person has certainly stole the limelight, and he is none other than Jitu Rai, one of India’s finest shooters and a strong medal contender in this Rio Olympics 2016.
Jitu is competing in the 10 metre air rifle event, and with a scores of 96, 96, 98, 96, 96, 98, he has entered in the final of the 10 metre air rifle final. Another Indian shooter in this crucial event Gurpreet Singh has failed to make the cuts. The two lady shooters, Ayonika Paul and Apurvi Chandela have also disappointed the country. While Apurvi finishes 34th with 411.6 points, Ayonika grabs the 43rd spot of the qualification round with 407 points.
Shooting has always been a strong forte for the Indians and Jitu, who won the Gold medal at the ISSF World Cup in 2014, is a one of the biggest hopes for the country. Jitu made a solid start and shoots 96 in the first series. He scored the same in the second series too. China’s Pang Wei led the scoreboard with 97 and 98 after the first two series.
In the third series, Jitu scored 98 and moved up to the 10th spot, while Pang Wei still continued his domination and scored 99 in that series. Jitu slipped his position in the fourth and the fifth series as he scored two 96 respectively. But with a score of 98 in sixth and the final series, he get the cut for the finals.
