Apple‘s iPhone 7 will come with a 3 D Touch home button, or at least that is exactly how the latest bit of news to be churned out by the rumour mills goes.

The rumour, which comes from the stable of Mac Otakara, claims that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 7 may not include a physical home button, but instead opt for a touch-sensitive 3 D Touch home button with haptic feedback. This means that the button will not be visible on the front surface of the phone, but it will be able to mimic a sensation of pressing down on a button upon touching it. This system is expected to function similarly to the Force Touch trackpad seen on Apple’s most recent MacBooks. By implementing this technology, Apple might be moving in the rumoured direction which will see the removal of the home button in its entirety in next year’s iPhone 8.

Over the last few months, we have heard hundreds of design and functionality rumours about the new iPhone 7, which doesn’t even have an official launch date yet. But many of the later reports have been coming from sources that are reputed to be mostly accurate. The home button rumour too comes from such a source; Mac Otakara is a Japanese site that is said to have connections with Apple’s supply chains in Asia, making it a widely trusted source of information for Apple products. However, all rumours must be taken with a pinch of salt as no source can claim 100 percent authenticity on rumoured information.

However, if we see the possibility of the removal of a physical home button along with a previous rumour about the absence of a headphone jack, what we may have on our hands is a very significant likelihood of the new iPhone 7 being a water resistant model.

The iPhone 7 will be launched in September 2016, and if sources are to be believed, we will see it sometime in the week of September 12.
