Happy Halloween 2016: Halloween is one of the much-awaited festival in America, which is celebrated on 31st October. The Halloween tradition originated from Celtic harvest festivals particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, which was later Christianized as Halloween. this day is celebrated by children dressing up in frightening masks and costumes and they go out for Trick or Treating to houses. Apart from this people celebrate Halloween, by organizing  costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, watch horror films and decorate their house in a way to give a haunting appearance. Halloween is celebrated the evening before the Christian holy days of All Hallows’ Day, therefore, it is also known as All Saints’ Eve.

All Saint’s Eve: When is All Saint’s Eve?

All Saints’ Day is celebrated on 1st November, which is the day after Halloween. Halloween is also known as the All-Hallows’-Eve which is the night-before-All-Saints’- Day. All saints day is known to be a Christian festival which is celebrated in honor of all the saints. This is celebrated in Roman Catholic, Anglican and Protestant churches.

Meaning of Halloween

Even though there is a history behind the origin of this festival Halloween, these days in the west Halloween is basically celebrated in a fun way. Kids put on costumes and go door-to-door to get candy. Trick-or-treating is also known as ‘guising’ or disguising. this began in the middle age where poor people would dress up in costumes and go to different houses during Hallowmas begging for food or money in exchange for songs and prayers. This was called “souling”. However, now Halloween is treated as a fun festival where adults organize costume parties and celebrate with close friends and family.

Origin of Halloween

Halloween the festival originated from Ireland and Scotland around the time of Christ. On this day the celts celebrated it was when animals were moved into barns and pens to prepare for the winter. It was also the time for harvesting crops.This festival was called Samhain. Another tale regarding Halloween was that he Jack-O-Lantern used during the festival dates back to a story of a man named Jack who tricked the devil into climbing a tree. Once it did Jack carved a cross on the trunk of the tree to stop the devil from coming down. The devil made a deal that Jack will not be allowed in heaven if he removed the cross from the tree. With this Jack was neither allowed in Heaven and Hell and wandered around the earth with a single candle to light his way.This is one of the reasons why pumpkins are carved out during Halloween.

Superstitions of Halloween

One old superstition regarding Halloween was that spirits would roam around to possess a body, therefore people would dress up as ghosts and fairies and make loud noises to scare away the spirits. Some other superstitions include

  • if a person sees a bat inside or outside their house on the day of Halloween, then ghosts and spirits are nearby.
  • A black cat on the day of Halloween would mean that a witch is around, and in case one hurts the cat then they will be cursed for a year.
  • If a lighted candle blows out, then sprits are nearby.
  • If a spider is seen on Halloween night it would mean that the spirit of a dead loved one is watching over.

In conclusion, this festival Halloween has a lot of history behind its origin. However, people these days celebrate and enjoy this festival with one another, by spreading love and happiness. Costumes are a major part of Halloween, and everyone enjoys dressing up and having a good time by playing pranks, trick-or-treating and partying.
