Halloween 2016: Trick or Treat! Halloween isn’t just a time for kids to wear costumes, isn’t just about partying hard. The time is great for movie freaks, as they can catch up with the best scary Halloween movies with friends and families during the event. With a tonne of scary movies available out there, we have rounded up our very own horror movies for Halloween list. The five movies that we are listing are the top recommendation from people who like everything macabre.
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
This one tops our list. It’s an oldie and a horror classic. The American sci-fi horror film was the first sequel to 1931 hit movie Frankenstein. Directed by James Whale, the movie has often been hailed as Whale’s masterpiece. The film holds a 100 percent “Fresh” rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes and often appears in 100 Best Movies lists. Rooted in the subplot of Mary Shelley’s novel ‘Frankenstein’, the film immediately follows the event of its prequel. In the film, Frankenstein, the scientist decides to leave his evil experiments. But, after Dr. Pretorius kidnaps Frankenstein’s wife he proceeds to create a new creature who’ll help him save his wife’s life.
The Exorcist (1973)
There isn’t a top scary movie for Halloween list that doesn’t mention The Exorcist. Directed by William Friedkin, it’s considered one of the greatest horror movie of all time, Based on a book of the same name, the movie is about the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl and her mother’s attempts to win back her child through an exorcism conducted by two priests. 20th Century Fox Television has developed a television series on The Exorcist, that aired on September 23, 2016. Till today, the film is lauded for its complex and challenging special effects. Watch it if you haven’t already. And watch it again, if you have.
Oculus (2013)
The film is about two siblings who are haunted by the death of their parents ten years ago. While struggling to built their relationship, tragedy strikes again. This time the sister Kaylie suspects that their antique mirror, known as the Lasser Glass, is behind everything that has been going wrong in their family. She tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon. Directed by Mike Flanagan, Oculus has a kind of eerie atmosphere that makes in a perfect include in our list of best horror movies for Halloween.
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
The film takes its name from the 1938 song “Jeepers Creepers”. This one too is about two siblings while returning home from college during Spring break. On the road at night, they encounter an inhuman creature. Speaking of the film, Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times wrote that the film “has the scariest opening sequence of any horror picture in recent memory”. While the plot isn’t very well constructed, the film has abundant scary moments. The film has a sequel, Jeepers Creepers 2, and a Jeepers Creepers 3 is currently being shot. It’ll premiere on Jeepers Creepers 3.
The Witch (2015)
“Be warned: It’ll scare the hell out of you,” Peter Travers of Rolling Stone. Directors Robert Eggers has set the story in 1630 New England and revolved around the Puritan family who encounters forces of evil in the woods beyond their farm. Universally praised, The Witch, “as thought-provoking as it is visually compelling, The Witch delivers a deeply unsettling exercise in slow-building horror”. Variety rightfully comments, “A fiercely committed ensemble and an exquisite sense of historical detail conspire to cast a highly atmospheric spell in The Witch, a strikingly achieved tale of a mid-17th-century New England family’s steady descent into religious hysteria and madness.”
