the religious festival Ganesh or Vinayaka Chaturthi is celebrated to honour Lord Ganesh. this year the auspicious date is being celebrated on Monday, Sept. 5 as per the ‘tithi’. the symbol of good fortune, wisdom, prosperity and wealth Ganesh Chaturthi is mainly observed in Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India in the month of Bhadra. the Hindu calendar has a unique reason to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi before any other religious festival starts in India. the lord Ganesh is the remover of obstacles and thus he is so important in hindu religious belief.
Pujas, special food, delicious sweets, elaborate decoration and dazzling lighting and fireworks are all part of this celebration. Lord Ganesh is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On the first day of the festival the idol are placed at homes or in public pandals, for special prayers, songs and pujas. They stay for 10 days to taken through streets in colourful processions symbolising the seeing-off of Vinayaka after blessing the mankind with his blessing and taking away all their pains and misfortune. The ritual is known as Visarjan.
