The Group of Twenty (G20) gathered for the twelfth time on the 7th and 8th of July this year in the city of Hamburg, Germany, at Hamburg Messe. Among the members of the G20 summit were the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, and Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who had met each other in Washington just a few days ago.
NitiAayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya tweeted that in an unplanned moment, Donald Trump waved to Narendra Modi and walked up to talk to him. Modi seemed to state a few points to Trump. Ivanka Trump, who works as a special advisor to the White House, was also seen shaking hands with Narendra Modi. During his visit to Washington, Narendra Modi had invited Donald Trump and Ivanka Trump to India.
Arvind Panagariya, who accompanied the Prime Minister to the summit as a Sherpa, also posted pictures of Narendra Modi and Donald Trump greeting each other moments before the sessions started and Panagariya described the moment as a memorable one. Panagariya also represented India in the negotiations for the leaders’ statements.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had several one-on-one meetings with members of the G20 summit including British Prime Minister Theresa May, all the while having short talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and IMF Chief Christine Lagarde among others.
The summit focused on several agendas of global importance like global economic growth, international trade, financial market regulations, implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Growth, women empowerment economically, terrorism and Syria. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met for the first time as President and President and agreed to a ceasefire in Syria. Modi indirectly accused Pakistan of terrorism by the several groups operating on Pakistani soil. King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was absent from the summit and Ibrahim Abdulaziz Al-Assaf, a State Minister, represented Saudi Arabia at the summit.
