Federation Cup 2016 Semifinals schedule:One of India’s most prestigious football tournaments, Federations Cup has reached to its business end and till now this new format of the tournament has been a massive hit among the football lovers. Two teams from the North-East part of the country, Aizawl FC and Shillong Lajong FC have booked their berth for the semifinal along with the century old club of Kolkata, Mohun Bagan and Sporting Clube de Goa.
This year, the second most important football tournament of India, Federations Cup has arrived in this year with a new and interesting format. The top eight teams of the I-league have featured in this year’s Federation Cup and all the matches have been played in home and away basis. The biggest surprise has been pulled off surely by the Aizawl FC who has knocked out the current I-League champions and the defending champions of this tournament Bengaluru FC in a 3-2 aggregate over the two legs. It looks like an incredible feat for Aizwal FC as the Mizoram based club has been relegated from I-league this year.
Aizwal FC now has the opportunity to win this coveted football competition as two of the best clubs of country Bengaluru FC and East Bengal have already been ruled out of the tournament. Joel Sunday, one of the pivotal attacking players of Aizawl FC said in an AIFF press release that the current champions of England, Leicester City has motivated the team and they are looking to achieve the same feat what Leicester achieved in England.
“[Premier League champions] Leicester City motivated us to upset the ‘Champions of India.’ The Leicester story inspired us to go out and the field and play as it is our last day on Earth,” Joel further added, “Each and every player in the Aizawl FC squad took motivation from players in the Leicester City squad as the Leicester players became something from nothing and we wanted to show the World that we are something.” Joel also gave stress on the fact, “We are united in our cause — we are confident of our abilities and with two of the best teams in India getting knocked out (Bengaluru FC and Kingfisher East Bengal), we might clinch the Federation Cup for ourselves this year. It will be a fairytale ending if we win it,”
On the other hand, the ‘Mariners’ thrashed Salgaocar by 7-2 over the two legs. Sporting Clube de Goa, the only representative of Goa in the semifinal, also beat Mumbai FC and booked their berth. Another fairytale happened when Assam based club Shillong Lajong FC beat another footballing institution East Bengal by 4-3 aggregate over the two legs. Lajong beat the ‘Reds and Golds’ in their home groun by 2-1 and drew 2-2 in Kolkata after the extra time.
