Today, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will decide for sure if Peter Thiel would stay on the company’s board. On Monday, they are holding the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting where all of Facebook’s board members includingThiel will be up for re-election. But since, Zuckerberg own 60% of the voting power so it likely that he’ll have the final call.
Thiel is the co-founder of Paypal. He is a supporter of Donald Trump and has managed to bring Gawker Media to bankruptcy. These might affectFacebook’s business. Therefore, there’s a real chance that Thiel might be voted to step down the board.
The Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE), had even launched a petition demanding Peter Thiel’s removal. The petition reads,“We are digital media writers, editors and producers represented by the Writers Guild of America, East. We are appalled that Peter Thiel would use some of his billions to fund litigation intended to put Gawker out of business.” “We call upon Facebook to remove Thiel from its board of directors. A person committed to silencing journalism he doesn’t like should not sit on the board of a company that serves as the portal to digital news for tens of millions of people.”
In an interview, Lowell Peterson,WGAEexecutive director, recently said, “Facebook is the portal through which so much news, particularly online news, is accessed and even sent out now,” Petersonsaid, “[News outlets] depend on social media like Facebook for their survival, for getting their message out, for getting their stories and videos out.”
In May, reports said, that Facebook has been manipulating contents, biassed when it comes to the news they promote. Apparently, Facebook editors have been blacklisting controversial topics and information that appear on the Trending Topics.
Regarding Theil’sfunding of Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker,Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg had said,“what he did on his own. Not as a board member.”
