The only Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar created history after entering the Rio Olympics Final after qualifying the Vault event with 8th rank in the semi-finals.
The Tripura girl entered final with 14.850 scores creating further hopes for India so as to grab Gold for the first time. Coming up as apparatus finalist for an artistic gymnastic category, Dipaentered the finals without attempting three other events naming as uneven bars, floor exercise and balancing beam. Unable to repeat her events, she still booked her seat for the final securing 8th positionas in overall grade.
She tightened herself as 6th in rank, but Canada’s Shallon Olsen stupendous performance slipped two points down thus securing 8th for India to enterthe finals. Being 8th rank as the last seat to get through Olympics final, it comprises of five subdivisions in total. Dipa could continue with only three subdivisions after which position depended on the performances by USA, Japan, Canada and Russia.
Howsoever, USA’s Simone Byles known as flying American topped the list with 16.050 points, followed by Canada, India, etc. Other countries like Japan, Russia, Cuba, Mexico, did not qualify for finals merely scoring 14.366 for Japan’s Saw Miyakawa; 14.633 for Cuba’s Marcia Vidiaux; and finally 14.400 for Mexico’s Alexa Moreno. Also, Canada comprised three qualifiers Brittany Rogers, Shallon Olsen and Elisabeth Black, out of which only one could enter the finals.

Dipa Karmakar being the sole Indian gymnastto qualify for finals will compete USA, Canada, etc. On the eve of Independence Day of India, Karmakar may have sparkling eyes of billion with a Gold for the very first time.
