The most awaited game on Matchday 5 of the Premier League will see Antonio Conte’s 2nd placed Chelsea take on Jurgen Klopp’s 6th placed Liverpool at the Stamford Bridge on Saturday, September 15. Both Chelsea and Liverpool failed to qualify for a place in the UEFA Champions League, Europe’s elite competition but will definitely look to make amends this season and hope for a good run in the beginning stages of the year-long league.
Eden Hazard has warned his Chelsea team-mates they must improve defensively against free-scoring Liverpool who scored 14 goals in 5 games this summer which include 4 against Champions Leicester at home last Saturday.
Chelsea come into this fixture after settling for a 2-2 draw against Swansea City in their last fixture at the Liberty Stadium. Diego Costa’s 18th-minute goal was cancelled by Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalty. Costa, who has netted four times in as many games for the Blues this season and also scored twice for Spain when World Cup qualifying began earlier in the month has finally hit a decent run of form. However, he will definitely be under scrutiny from Jurgen Klopp’s side owing to his previous clashes with the Liverpool players in previous games. The Blues have not lost a single game in this season so far having drawn one and winning five of their last six games spanning all competitions and will definitely start the match on a higher note than the Liverpool players. They have conceded in all but one match so far, and will be without talismanic centre-back and captain John Terry on Friday because of an ankle injury. David Luiz who returned to the Stamford Bridge will take over Terry’s position as the spearhead of the back four alongside Ivanovic and Cahill. Marcos Alonso could also come in at full-back with Branislav Ivanovic having failed to impress last time around.
Liverpool had an impressive start to the season with a 4-3 away win against Arsenal in the Emirates but slumped to 0-2 loss against Burnley which saw them drop some significant places in the league table. Currently, at the sixth position, the Reds will be going into the match with three wins, two losses and a draw in their last six games spanning all competitions. Although last Saturday’s performance against Leicester will be a plus for them, Jurgen Klopp will be vary of the in-form Chelsea side who have not gone pointless this season so far. Liverpool will have Dejan Lovren available once more at the back , but the trip to London looks to have come too soon for Emre Can who needs to regain match fitness after an ankle problem. New summer transfer window recruit Sadio Mane is expected to start along with Coutinho and Firminho for a possible front three against the Blues.
