
The poster of “Begum Jaan” was revealed by Vidya Balan which is a remake of the Bengali film “Rajkahini” directed by Srijit Mukherjee. The film “Begum Jaan” is also directed by Srijit Mukherjee. Vidya Balan is seen as the owner of a brothel in Punjab; the role played by Rituparna Sengupta in “Rajkahini.”The poster gives an empowering message “My Body. My House. My Country. My Rules.”

In an earlier interview, Vidya Balan commented that her role speaks of Woman empowerment and it raises a very vital question that why would a woman’s body be controlled by her father, brother husband or son. The courtesan that Vidya Balan plays in “Begum Jaan” is a fiercely independent woman who doesn’t allow anyone to take away her space and live life on her own terms. Vidya Balan also commented that the dubbing and the post production of the film is completed recently.

Vidya Balan evoked the fierceness and arrogance of a brothel madame in the very first look of the film. The 38-years-old actress said that the film depicts the story of survivors. The film is set in Punjab and depicts the story of displaced women. Vidya Balan told an entertainment website that the film intimately deals with the turbulent political scenario of the Partition era and the survivors are trying to protect their identity defying nation.
National Award winning director Srijit Mukherjee directed the film. “Begum Jaan” marks his Bollywood debut. The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Chunkey Pandey, Ila Arun, Ashish Vidyarthi, Pallavi Sharda, Rajit Kapoor, Rajesh Sharma, Vivek Mushran.
In the Bengali film “Rajkahini” Rituparna Sengupta played Begum Jaan, which was set during the partition of Bengal. The film showed communal riot with all its brutality. Rituparna Ghosh’s character appears merciless at first, but she is completely dedicated and protective of those who are under her care.
Srijit Mukherjee tweeted that Asha Bhonsle will lend her voice to the film. The film was shot in Punjab and Bihar. Begum Jaan is scheduled to hit the theaters on April 14, 2017.
