The ATP World Tour Finals 2016 kicked off on November 13 at the O2 Arena in London. This year’s ATP World Tour Finals saw a couple of players Gael Monfils and Dominic Thiem making their debut. However, things did not turn out to be good for Monfils in his debut appearance in the ATP World Tour Finals as he had to pull out of the tournament for an injury. And that opened the gate for David Goffin to make his first appearance in the tournament. Goffin will open his account in this tournament against Novak Djokovic.
Gael Monfils has been struggling with a rib injury since as early as October while playing in Stockholm. And it seemed that he could carry on with injury and compete in the ATP World Tour Final 2016. In fact, he played a couple of matches but failed to make much of an impact as he lost both his matches to Dominic Thiem and Milos Raonic. And in the end, his rib injury forced him to pull out of the tournament which opened the door for 25-year old Belgian David Goffin to come in and compete in the tournament for the first time. And as he makes an entry into the tournament he will up against Novak Djokovic who has been dethroned from the top the ATP singles rankings by Andy Murray very lately.
In the last match of the Round Robin, Djokovic will be up against this young Belgian as he will look forward to continuing his winning streak in this particular. He will resume his bid to retain the title for the sixth time on the trot a few hours from now in the O2 Arena against Goffin. Djokovic has won two of his group league matches although he made a poor start to the ATP World Tour Finals 2016 losing the first set to Dominic Thiem. However, he picked up his performance and came back from that position to clinch that match. He won the second match against Raonic and will be up against Goffin, winning which will give him 200 more points.
In all the matches between these two players, Djokovic has quite expectedly come out on top. They have met four times before this match and Djokovic has won all those matches. In these four matches, Djokovic has lost only one set to the Belgian. And this round it seems all set for Djokovic to win the tie.
Djokovic is looking to win the ATP Masters World Tour 2016 and if he does that it will be for the sixth time in the row. And this time it is all the more important for him to win the title as it will give him the world no 1 position in the ATP rankings.
