Following months of a rumour that Apple will be abandoning the headphone jack, the company confirmed today that they are doing exactly that. They are scrapping the 3.5mm port on their latest iPhone 7.
Apple has reported that the handset will support the all-new wireless earbuds Called ‘Apple AirPods’. It’s priced at $159 and will start shipping in late October. Apple is also introducing a new wireless communications protocol, and it’s called the W1 chip. Apple’s Phil Schiller described the company’s move to a new wireless chip as “fixing the challenges”.
The W1 chip sits inside the company’s new EarPod headphones. It can easily connect to iCloud-connected devices like an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Apple hasn’t detailed whether its W1 chip uses a proprietary communications protocol.
