The world of wearable gadgets will receive a fillip this year with the launch of the Apple Watch 3. Apple is engaged in intense competition with Korean rival Samsung, which, with its Gear range of smartwatches, has already garnered a significant share of the market. With the Apple Watch Series 1 and 2 doing reasonably well in the global market, the Apple Watch Series 3, often abbreviated simply as the Apple Watch 3, has been in the headlines for the last few months and justifiably so. The latest news concerns the battery of the new wearable gadget.
One of the main demands of Apple wearable technology users is improved battery life. Apple has recently filed a patent which shows an innovative new technology which can maximise the battery life of the new smartwatch. The new patent, reported by 9to5mac, lays down a modular strap design. In what could be a revolutionary new way to charge the Apple Watch 3, an embedded battery is also featured on the strap. This battery provides power to the watch via an induction coil whichis located on the bottom of the dial. Such a design will eliminate the need of a portable charger and will act as a power bank. The same battery will also be charged via the same proprietary wireless charging method. The patent also shows a round watch design, which may not translate to a circular display however.
The patent, released by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) also states that a “connector-free magnetic charger/winder” is on the cards for the new Apple Watch 3. The watch may have a nearly everlasting battery life as the Digital Crown may be turned until the watch is charged fully. Similar to old watches with winding mechanisms, the new Apple Watch 3 will now be charged manually.

The new smartwatch will be released later this year alongside the iPhone 8, which is in its tenth year. Not much is known about the form factor of the Apple Watch 3; although the patents show a circular dial, experts suggest that the watchOS has been designed for square-shaped displays. The Apple Watch 3 will feature afaster S3 chip processorwith a more powerful watchOS 4.We expect a September 2017 release date for the new smartwatch.
