Manchester United Transfer News: Jose Mourinho will seem to further strengthen his squad once the forthcoming transfer season in order to make a comeback into the Premier League top four and at this point, his number one target seems to be Atletico Madrid’s French striker Antoine Griezmann. The striker, who had an excellent 2016, fell short of glory twice in the Champions League final as well as the Euro 2016 final but that hasn’t taken any credit away whatsoever from his performances. The 25-year-old forward has been among the top three players in Europe alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in contention for the Ballon D’Or and it seems that the Manchester United boss has taken a special liking to him.
Previously, Jose Mourinho had told Old Trafford chiefs that they must prioritise a No 10 with the talent and ability to link midfield to attack and with age not on Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s side, a pacey attacking box player is a requisite for the Red Devils. Talks are underway between Manchester United and Atletico Madrid over the potential transfer of the French International with United willing to pay more than £60million to land the French forward. Since Mourinho’s appointment at the helm of Old Trafford, the Portuguese manager has experimented with a range of attacking techniques with some yielding significant fruits. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba finally starting to gain their rhythm, the manager’s attention, quite predictably has turned to the front three. Griezmann‘s inclusion in United line-up could very well be a welcome addition beside Zlatan as the pacey striker has proved himself both dangerous and unselfish in case of quick counter-attacks and that plays very well into Mourinho’s strategies playing Ibrahimovic up as a No.9 in the box.
What has fueled the transfer rumour mill more was when Griezmann openly confessed his interest to play beside good friend Paul Pogba at Manchester. Griezmann has a contract with Atletico until 2021 but his relationship with the club and coach Diego Simeone has soured this season which can be termed as a sort of collateral for many crucial games lost. However, Atletico still in the Champions League, Griezmann will stay in Spain for the remainder of the season but United are hopeful of sealing the 25-year-old soon enough. And even though the deal might not materialise at all in the January transfer window, Mourinho’s determination might very well see Griezmann move to England by next year.
This is just one of many Manchester United transfer news and rumours that are scheduled to go underway once the January transfer window opens. Mourinho’s intentions of strengthening his squad are strong and by the time the window ends we may end up looking at a lot of important acquisitions for the Portuguese.
