Renowned athlete and the two-times Olympian, Anju Bobby George has resigned from the post of the Kerala State Sports Council President due to the alleged corruption probe was charged against her by the Sports Minister of Kerala E.P. Jayarajan. Not only George, the other 13 members of that council have also stepped down from their post due to this insult.
The sports council called for a meeting on Wednesday morning and Anju, the only medal winning athlete of the country at the World Championship, announced her decision there. Later she made her decision public at a press conference and also revealed that the controversy made her give the resignation.
George told reporters on Wednesday, “Sports is beyond the purview of any party or politics. I was very happy when I was given this opportunity to head the sports council. But unfortunately, things did not get the way I want it to. Hence, the decision to step down. ” Later this star athlete added, “They can kill sports, but they can’t defeat us”
Anju Bobby George was appointed to head the sports council by the previous Oommen Chandy-led UDF government. Former athlete Preeja Sreedharan, Indian hockey team captain P.R. Sreejesh and Volleyball player Tom Joseph were also members of the council and they also had resigned with George.
A few days ago, Kerala’s Sports Minister insulted Anju and accused her of financial irregularities during her tenure as the as the president of Kerala Sports Council. George quite naturally denied the accusations and termed the allegations as baseless. Anju even had taken the issue to the current Chief Minister of the state, Pinarayi Vijayan but he also stood by his sports minister.
A couple of days later, the Gold medal winner of both Asian Games and Asian Championships wrote a five-page open letter to E.P. Jayarajan, challenging him to order a ‘truthful and transparent’ probe of the spending of the council during the last ten years. Broken hearted Anju also said she would even return the Rs 40,000 she claimed for her flight charges.
