According to legend Dhanteras leads back to a story about the young son of King Hima. His horoscope predicted his death by snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. The concerned wife did not allow him to sleep and put out all her ornaments of gold and silver coins at the entrance of the room and lit lamps all over the place. After which she told stories and sang songs to keep her husband from falling asleep. When Yama, the god of Death arrived at the doorstep as a snake, his eyes were dazzled by the brightness of the lamps and the jewellery. As he could not enter the room, he sat there through the night listening to the stories and songs. In the morning Yama went away. Therefore, this day is celebrated as Dhanteras. Dhanteras 2016 will be celebrated two days before Diwali and is also called ‘Chhoti Diwali’.
