4 Tips for Avoiding Acne

Acne affects everyone at some point in their life — some worse than others. While there are no shortages of acne treatments to choose from, there are some simple tips to avoid acne in the first place.

At the very least, following these steps will help keep any unfortunate breakouts to an absolute minimum.

Wash Your Face

We all know to get in the shower or bath and soap up our bodies to get clean. But can you honestly remember the last time you applied soap to your face and washed it?

The first and easiest way to avoid acne is to simply keep your face clean. Every time you wash your body, wash your face. It’s also a good idea to wash your face first thing in the morning even if you don’t shower, as pillowcases will collect dirt and bacteria over a few day.

It’s especially important to wash your face right after a workout. Your pores are open and there’s sweat everywhere; the perfect combination for bacteria to get into your hair follicles and cause pimples.

This goes doubly if you get body pimples. At the very least you should be getting out of your sweaty exercise clothes as soon as possible.

If It Touches Your Face, Wash It

That’s not to say that right after something touches your face, you should wash the item.

Instead what we’re saying is to make sure that things which come into contact with your face are kept clean. Pillowcases, for example, should be cleaned and changed once or twice a week. This prevents you spending 6-8 hours with your face rubbing against cumulative dirt and germs every night.

Face washers should be cleaned and switched over every few days. Headphones and smartphones should also be given a wipe down fairly frequently.

Watch What You Eat

Foods that cause insulin spikes can result in inflammation and, you guessed it, acne breakouts. Sugary foods and dairy products in particular can make you more susceptible to acne, so keep an eye on your intake.

On the other hand, some foods can help improve your skin health. Leafy green vegetables and brightly colored fruit and vegetables are great. They boost your antioxidant levels and dampen inflammation. Eggs, nuts, and legumes are also good for giving your skin a healthy glow.

Last but not least, don’t forget to drink plenty of water. It does more than just keep you hydrated.

Check Your Skincare Routine

Don’t wear makeup when you’re going to go exercise; it’s just going to make your skin even more susceptible to acne than a regular workout will already.

Well-moisturized skin is better at fighting off acne than dry, dehydrated skin. Dry skin leads to increased oil production, and increased oil production leads to more acne.

Keep an eye on what sunscreen you might be using, and opt for one that doesn’t clog pores.

Using homemade facial masks at night, compared with synthetic versions, can have tremendous benefits for your skin in the long run.  These will help your skin stay youthful, and beautiful!
