Vocational Training and Assessment Competence: Everyone demonstrates competence in any area by practicing their trade. However, in some occupations, you will not even get within smelling distance of demonstrating anything without the required qualifications. Therefore, your first priority is acquiring the certificates.

Once you have gone through the training, you can then demonstrate competence by:

  • Holding and providing the certificates on demand
  • Demonstrating your competence practically
  • Showing evidence that you have enough experience in the relevant field in addition to the qualifications

Having said that, your RTO determines how you demonstrate your competence. They are, however, honor-bound to provide evidence indicating how they determined if you have adequately displayed competence or not. Their decision should be in line with the requirements of the product on display.

In any industry, there is a lot of competition for the same positions and the job does not always go to the person with the prettiest papers. While qualifications on paper is important, some industries would rather go for skills. To place yourself strategically, why not go for both? You stand a better chance of being noticed out of the myriads of applicants that are vying for the same position. Check out Fortress Learning TAEfor more on getting relevant skills.

Capturing evidence

This is done by outlining the requirements of the training product. Those are the compared with the candidate’s actual skills which are checked against the expectations.

The best way to run the outlining exercise is to have all the required skills and knowledge documented per unit of competency in line with the module that the trainer or assessor delivers. The evidence is then verified against the expectations and the best person lands the position.

How to meet the current skill requirements

The best way to get here is to constantly check for updates on upgrades, then getting the required qualifications. That way, you are always abreast of changes in the industry and you retain your competence levels. The industry is responsible for providing the practice and valid assessments that are necessary for your upgrade and to ensure that you are aware of any changes in order to keep up.

The following are the current skills any trainer or assessor should possess:

  • Be on top of any new requirements and new training packages that may render your current skills irrelevant.
  • Be informed about the required skills for trainers and assessors, the training packages available and the accredited courses being offered.

Acquisition of current skills depends on the industry area. There are industries that work in an environment where technology is constantly changing. In such an industry, there is always a need to up your skills. Otherwise, work-related opportunities will always scuttle by your desk without so much as a glance in your general direction. Fortunately, most of these industries provide upgrading opportunities for their staff. This is where you as a trainer or assessor come in.

Getting into this field requires a set of specific skills which are dependent on the industry you choose to specialize in and you must demonstrate your competence before anyone can take you seriously as a trainer or assessor, so get those skills.
