In the past, furniture was only built by raw woods and other natural elements. However, furniture nowadays is made mainly through man-made materials like dependable plywood, laminate board and chipboard and much more that are different from wood that comes from nature. These elements are free from disadvantages that may be the case with natural wood. Furniture elegance enhances the owner’s home decor. Wood comes with the drawback of swelling due to imbibitions or shrinking because of drying up. This creates a lot of trouble during season changes.

That is why different modern materials are used to manufacture furniture today. Some materials are  listed below:

  • Natural Wood:

No matter how many new materials come to the market, natural wood has its own authentic value among the customers. Clients with requirements of natural wood for their furniture disregard the fact that natural wood is a wasteful material. Almost 25% of the raw material is wasted while sculpturing the model from it. If the calculation is made to find out the loss of wood while converting the tree trunk to the desirable furniture shape, it can be shown that the amount of wood wasted is more than the amount that is eventually used.

  • Plywood:

Plywood is made from the normal wood. In this process, the cover of the tree trunk is cut thinly in a rotary motion from the main log with a big knife attached to a lathe-like machine. The width of the coverings cut from the trunk can be controlled. Depending on the width, numerous veneers can be cut from the trunk. Then the veneers are attached with one another. It is more like a lamination process. The losses at sawdust in this process are almost zero.

  • Chipboard:

Chipboard is made from fine chips that are dried, packed in, and brought together as boards with the help of resin glue. Chipboards are made only by machines as in case of manual labor, trimming at the edges of the board leave outgrowths that look nasty and decrease the elegance of the furniture made by it. Other than that when it is cut by machine, a particular size can be cut at one time without any need of further trimming. Although this can only be realized by a precise saw, which can sustain fine adjustments— it also requires a blade made from tungsten for resisting scrape.

  • Other elements:

Wood and the products made from it hold the sheer market of furniture. But nowadays other materials are replacing wood elements whether single-handedly or combined with the wood. For example, plastic laminates are widely used for table and other tops. It is available in a wide range of colors, designs, texture. One of the best advantages of its usage is that this does not retain liquid stains. It is also heatproof and easily cleaned by only wiping.

Other than plastic laminate, metal is also being used in the furniture industry. Metal is not popular for building the body itself but it is used widely for making stands, legs of the furniture. Iron is the most used metal that is joined mainly by wielding.

For making furniture, first of all, timber is selected through which the furniture is meant to be built. Then it is relayed through for seasoning kiln, and then it is cut through for the standard width of the timber. Then the timber is relayed to the machine shop where it is sawed to size, planed, grooved, shaped as per the requirements. To save time in the cutting process, the workers bring together the timber, which is meant to be cut in the same shape and clamped together. Then by the high-speed rotating cutter, the bundle is cut into the desired shape. In case of automatic veneering, machines are used for various operations. As the veneers are required to be of the same width an automatic rotating cutter is the best option for achieving that goal.

After all the cutting processes are completed, the prototype is relayed towards the assembly shop. In the assembly shop, the job is framed into doors, drawers, carcasses and many other shapes as per the client’s need. After the glue has dried, the parts may be relayed back to the machine shop for performing such cutting operations that are not possible on the whole object at once. For example, sanding the joints, shaping the edges, etc., these tasks have to be done after the assembly shop’s work is done. Then it again goes to the assembly shop for final assembly. The final model is brushed, polished and cleaned to remove extra glue, and other anomalies from the model. It is then inspected, and hand sanded to make the model perfect. And finally, it is then stained and sprayed, and other finishing touches are given to it.

Furniture elegance is based on various factors such as built, design, color, craftsmanship, building material and many more. It also depends on the taste of the client too.
