Valve’s annual DotA 2 Tournament Price pool over 24$ million

Valve’s annual DotA 2 tournament

How To Become a Pro Gamer?

Last year’s “The International”, Valve’s annual DotA 2 tournament, had a total prize pool of a bit over $24 million. The winner, “Team Liquid” consisting of GH, Matumbaman, Miracle, KuroKy, and MinD_ContRoL (these are their in-game aliases, of course), took home the largest share of this prize, over $10 million – that’s $2 million apiece. And The International is just one of the many high-profile eSports tournaments out there, each one having an increasing prize pool given the rising popularity of eSports, in general. This, of course, turns competitive gaming into a very attractive career, especially if one loves gaming. And it makes one wonder how to become a pro gamer and be good at it to be able to make a living by playing video games. Well, here are a few tips on how to start.

Choose the right game for you

The most profitable video games (from an eSports perspective) are DotA 2, LoL (League of Legends), CS: GO (CounterStrike: Global Offensive), StarCraft II, and Heroes of the Storm (not to be confused with The Doors’ “Riders on the Storm”), but there are several others with hundreds of tournaments and thousands of players to compete with. The trick is to find the game that you are good at and you have a chance of becoming a pro. Then, start to…

Practice, practice, practice

Just like in the case of anything else in life, “practice makes perfect”. But in this case, practice doesn’t mean just playing the game non-stop until blood starts squirting from your eye but to study the games played by others, too, to find new tactics, new strategies to try and incorporate into your own style of play. With so many games streamed live on Twitch and other services, and the numerous recordings of games on YouTube, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Join a community

Nobody will even consider to invite you to a team if you don’t show off your skills. Pro gaming is not just about an individual’s skills but also about teamplay – learn the rules, join the ranks of your favorite games’ communities and continue evolving.

Once in, you will have the chance to show your worth, join a team (or be invited into one) or even create your own. And once you get good enough at playing your game, you can start entering tournaments and testing your team’s skills against others.

Stay motivated

You’ll win some, you’ll lose some – that’s how competitions work. Don’t let yourself be brought down by defeat. Instead, let the words of Malcolm X guide you: “Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time”. You can learn a great deal by analyzing your losses and fine-tune your technique and be better next time.
