For the same, the Department released detailed advertisements in leading Indian newspapers and offered step by step information to the users of how they can link these two unique numbers by sending an SMS to either 567678 or 56161. The advertisement also read that people can visit the online website of the official e-filing organization and link their numbers. The department says that people with identical names as well as with difference in their names can get their number linked. The advertisement reads, that by linking the two numbers one can, “seamlessly avail online, a world of income tax facilities.” “Aadhaar can also be seeded into PAN database by quoting Aadhaar in PAN application form for new PAN allotment or by quoting Aadhaar in change request form used for a reprint of PAN card,” it said in the advertisement. The step is being taken at a time when Supreme Court is about to hear many petitions on June 27 that challenge the constitutional validity of Aadhar Card and also about the validity of Aadhar to be made mandatory as a document to avail many social welfare schemes run by the Government. Earlier this month the Income-Tax Department released a new e-facility offering a person’s Aadhaar Card with the PAN, it is a mandatory procedure for filing IT returns now. The official website has a new link on the homepage that assists a person in linking the two unique IDs. Through the link, a person can punch in his PAN number, Aadhaar Card & the name on his Aadhaar Card to initiate the registration. “After verification from the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), the linking will be confirmed. “In the case of any minor mismatch in Aadhaar name provided, Aadhaar OTP (one-time password) will be required,” the department had said in its advisory to taxpayers and individuals. The mandate has come under the Finance Act 2017 and makes it compulsory to enroll Aadhaar Card number for the filing of Income Tax Returns (ITR). With effect from July 1, Aadhaar Card will also be a mandatory document to apply for PAN Card. Aadhar Card is issued to a resident of India by UIDAI and PAN number is a 10-digit alphanumeric number issued to a person by the Income Tax department.
