The 2017 BMW 5 Series is a mid-size luxury car manufactured by German automaker BMW since 1972. The current seventh generation iteration adds class, refinement and grace to the old favourite. Codenamed the G30, the 2017 BMW 5 series will look to add a new generation of fans to the fabled German automaker. Unlike the previous generation 5 series, the 2017 model will be offered in a saloon and a Touring variant which is codenamed the G31. The two variants will thus be a 4-door saloon and a 5-door estate.
2017 BMW 5 Series: Specs and Features
The all-new 2017 BMW 5 series will be a luxury vehicle. The petrol engine variants of the new vehicle will be a 2.0 Litre B48 turbocharged I4, a 3.0 Litre B58 turbocharged I6 and the bigger 4.4 Litre V8 and its bigger variant, the4.4 Litretwin-turbo V8. The diesel variants include the2.0 Litre B47 turbocharged I4 and the3.0 LitreB57 turbocharged I6 version. For purpose of clarity, we have chosen the540i or the variant with the 3.0Litre B58 turbocharged I6 engine to showcase. The engine is inter-cooled and delivers 335 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque. BMW has claimed that the new car will go from o to 60mph in 3.9 seconds. The newplatformof the 2017 BMW 5 series uses multiple materials to increase structural rigidity and decrease overall mass. The body is made ofcarbon-fiber-reinforced polymer or CFRP mingled with magnesium, aluminium and high-strength steel. Air springs have been added both to the front and to the rear axle to aid ride quality. The front grille has been designed to be capable of closing and opening its shutters which allowfor optimal engine cooling and better aerodynamic flow. The transmission is an 8-speed automatic with manual shifting mode.
2017 BMW 5 Series: Interior and Exterior Improvements
The 2017 BMW 5 series has larger headlights with adaptive cornering lamps coming standard. They are placed against larger kidney grilles with the automatic shutters we mentioned. An additional pleat between the beltline and the crease that also goes through the outer door knobs distinguishes it from the larger BMW 7 series. The car is tall at58.2 inches and has a high ground clearance. Even the tallest passengers will find the 2017 BMW 5 series to their liking. The new car has optional Integral Active Steering (IAS), which combines rear-wheel steering with variable-ratio steering up front. The interiors of the car are spacious and well appointed.The BMW iDrive 6.0 system includes a brilliant 10.3-inch display which is also a touchscreen. Steering-wheel buttons can manage center-stack audio controls, voice commands, hand gestures, and the iDrive knob which has its own touchpad. The optional20-way multi-contour seats make for a superb riding experience.
2017 BMW 5 Series Price and Competition
The new 2017 BMW 5 Series will see a price tag of slightly more than $50,000s for the 530i, with the six-cylinder version, the 540i we have seen above, coming in at around $60,000. It will go up against the likes of theCadillac CT6, the Jaguar XF, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and theVolvo S90. BMW will look to launch this car in February. First seen at the 2016 Frankfurt Motor Show, the new 5 series will surely garner excellent reviews.
