Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr The compact SUV automobile market is heating up in India and Tata Motors is the latest biggie to enter the fray. The Tata Nexon was first showcased at the Auto Expo in February this year and has been seen undergoing testing for a few months. Tata will look to capitalise on its wide range of vehicles in the market and may also seek inspiration from the Jaguar and the Land Rover vehicles, brands which it owns. For a long time, Tata was seen as a manufacturer of heavy vehicles and later utilitarian cars. That design philosophy may witness a sea-change soon. We present the reasons of why we think so below. The Tata Nexon as seen at the 2016 Auto Expo. 2017 Tata Nexon Specs and Features The new compact SUV will have two engine variants: the diesel variant being a four-cylinder 1.5-litre diesel engine which in itself is a bigger cousin of the 1.05-litre Tiago engine. The other variation is a 1.2-litre petrol engine, a turbocharged version of the Tiago’s 1.2-litre Revotorq engine. Both the variants will have a power output of 100 to 110 BHP at 4,000rpm with the petrol variant having a torque of 130 to 140 Nm and the diesel variant putting out 200 to 210 Nm at 5,000rpm. Both engine variants should receive an AMT option and the diesel engine will probably receive a 6-speed manual transmission, while the petrol version will have to be content with a five-speed manual transmission. We expect both the variants to come with 16-inch alloy wheels. 2017 Tata Nexon Exterior The exterior of the Tata Nexon testifies to its SUV aspirations. The car is essentially a sub-4 metre SUV and has a muscular exterior. A stretched grille nicely complements its projector headlamps. A sharp and tapering roof on the car looks very similar to what we see on a coupe. The Nexon gets trapezoidal taillamps divided by a silver strip between them. A high rear bumper and a comparatively small rear windscreen complete the SUV-styled exterior. The plush Nexon interior. Source 2017 Tata Nexon Interior The first thing that stands out in the interior is the addition of a drive mode controller feature, never seen in any compact SUV before. Three drive modes, Eco, City and Sport, are available. Performance, fuel economy, traction control settings and ABS settings can be altered with these drive modes. The interior is clearly inspired by the Tata Zest which came earlier. A 6.5-inch touchscreen system works well and is located on the dashboard. Climate control system is present, as are the multi-function steering wheel, Harman 8 speaker Audio Setup, dual airbags and voice-controlled infotainment systems. 2017 Tata Nexon Price, Launch Date and Competition The Nexon will be aggressively priced in the range of 7 and 10 lakhs. The new compact SUV is expected in March 2017 and will go up against the Ford EcoSport, Mahindra’s NuvoSport and the TUV 300 and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. The car seems to provide excellent mileage at around 19 km/l in the diesel version. This will sit very well with potential customers who are looking for a good ride while not shelling out too much for it. We will keep updating this section when more news arrives.
