The latest news suggests that if one can detect a bug in the Nintendo 3DS gaming console, there will be awards for them in the form of prize money. So this can be regarded as a significant move in the quest for setting up a gaming experience free from any sort of vulnerability. Bounties are offered if one can detect vulnerabilities in Nintendo 3DS The prize money that has been announced ranges from $100 to $20,000 depending on the type of vulnerability that one may detect. Nintendo has laid out such a platform to set up a gaming experience which would be completely devoid of piracy and cheating. It will also prevent children coming getting associated with the inappropriate content, according to PowerUpGaming. So it can be regarded as a real great move from Nintendo. Nintendo has set up such a platform in collaboration with HackerOne, which is a “vulnerability coordination and bug bounty platform”. HackerOne, based out of San Francisco, has got some big names listed on their roster who have also taken such measures in order to fix any sort of vulnerability noticed in their system. The list includes the likes of Amazon Web Services, AirBNB, Starbucks, Yelp, Uber, GitHub, Slack, Twitter, Dropbox and many more. Nintendo is the latest addition to that roster. It has been posted on the official web page of HackerOne that Nintendo is looking for submissions in this category for the Nintendo 3DS model only and won’t accept any submission on issues involving anything else. To quote Nintendo’s post on HackerOne, “Nintendo is only interested in vulnerability information regarding the Nintendo 3DS™ family of systems and is not seeking vulnerability information regarding other Nintendo platforms, network service, or server-related information.” Regarding the reward it can be said that the company’s decision will be final on how much the reward money is going to be after one submits an entry. It is stated that “The reward amount depends on the importance of the information and the quality of the report. In general, the importance of the information is higher if the vulnerability is severe, easy-to-exploit, etc.” This program planned by Nintendo along with HackerOne regarding the identification of the vulnerability of the Nintendo 3DS is one of the welcome moves which deserves a lot of praise. And it remains to be seen just how successful the campaign of making Nintendo 3DS a gaming console free from any bug turns out. Whether it becomes successful or not will be revealed only with the passage of time.
