PV Sindhu opened the day for the Indians on a bright note, but it did not turn out to be what Indians would have wanted as Saina Nehwal lost out to her opponent in the Hong Kong Open 2016. Saina Nehwal made a poor start to her quarterfinal encounter as she failed to gather momentum and ended up with 8 points in the first. She made a comeback in the match as she won the second set 21-18. However, in the third set, she could maintain the revival she had achieved in the second set and lost out to the local favourite Cheung Ngan Yi by the narrowest of margins. The scores in the third set read 21-19 in favour of Cheung Ngan Yi. With this defeat, Saina failed to set up an all-Indian semifinal clash in the Hong Kong Open 2016. Had Saina managed to win her quarterfinal encounter she would have been up for a semifinal clash with PV Sindhu, who also had a tough day in the office. Sindhu got a real scare early in the day when her opponent played some scintillating badminton to take their quarterfinal encounter to the third set. Sindhu started the match nicely but failed to maintain her form against a reviving Liang Xiayou. However, in the third and deciding set Sindhu kept her calm and composure and came out on top. The scoreline, in the end, read 21-17, 21-23, 21-18 in favour of the Indian. All the expectations turned into ashes with the defeat of Saina as the hopes were still alive when Saina made a comeback in the second set. In another match, the ruling World Champion and Olympic Gold medal holder Carolina Marin outplayed her opponent to reach the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open 2016. She got warned by the on-pitch umpire for screaming during the match against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, which she won by the scoreline of 21-7, 21-18. However, that warning did not disturb Marin, and the scoreline shows how easily the match was wrapped up by Marin. PV Sindhu’s next match is going to be against Saina Nehwal slayer Cheung Ngan Yi in the semi-final of the Hong Kong Open 2016. It will be a match worth watching as it seems that PV Sindhu is in good form while Ngan Yi will also be on top of her confidence after beating such a high-profile player like Saina Nehwal in the quarterfinal.
