The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has started investigation Reliance Jio’s promotional plan which is offering free voice calls until this year’s end. The investigation started after a complain was brought by India’s largest telcom companies like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, who want clarification on the matter from the regulator. With time a fierce battle for Reliance Jio with other incumbent telecom operators has become more prominent. Jio’s unlimited offers for data and calls, which exceed a 90-day limit for promotional plans till December 31 st that includes free calls for life; interconnection usage charges (IUC); predatory and non-discriminatory pricing among other issues has given its rival telecom services a serious concern.

Trai chairman R S Sharma told the Economic Times “Operators have come and met us and in continuation with the letter they have submitted earlier, raised the interconnection usage charges (IUC), predatory and non-discriminatory pricing and other issues,”

As per the 2004 regulation of Trai, it is mandatory that tariffs by service providers should be non-predatory, non-discriminatory and compliant with IUC, where a fee is payable to an operator for receiving calls from other networks, which is 14 paise per minute.

Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal elaborated the issue in an interview to ET on 21 September, stating that if a voice service is being provided for free, it would be less than the IUC of 14 paise a minute and that will fall foul of the TTO. And when one goes below that cost, it is a very straightforward situation of predatory pricing.

Trai has reviewed operator-wise data from 5-19 September and has issued show cause notices to telcos as it was found to be violating license conditions related to interconnection and quality of service norms.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) is a subsidiary of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) that has come up with its brand new network connection that has taken the telecom industry of India by storm. His cheapest price for unlimited plans for network connection has come up as a threat to the other companies. Now it will be a crucial condition for Reliance with the latest accusation of violating of TRAI rules.

Now reliance has a good reason to back off its commitment of free call and cheap data. Reliance has always been cheaters. Be it RCOM and soon we will have JIO. RCoM made tall promises during 4G upgrade to existing customers for free or cheap data plans for prepaid and continuation of pre-migration plan for post paid. Now only after 2 month of upgrade of which 1 month there was no service. RCom has changed its policies and discontinued the pre-migration commitment. On top of it discontinued services when asked to clarify and continuing promised plans stating they have rights to change or discontinue plans as per their decision and customer should opt for it else they can terminate services. So beware or the Devil named reliance. Use free service then ditching them will be the best answer to the liars.
