Women’s Equality Day 2016: International Women’s Equality Day 2016, that falls on Aug. 26 celebrates women’s right to vote in the United States. This is the day proclaimed each year by the United States President to commemorate the granting of the vote to women throughout the country. On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified as law, under which women were granted the right to vote.

The amendment for the right to vote was first introduced in 1878. And forty years went by before a law was passed in the year 1920 that granted women the right to vote. The text of the amendment ran like this:
